Now winter is almost upon us (a few spots of snow forecast for Sunday) parsnips come into their own as a great addition to stews, soups, casseroles, and roasts....wonderful winter comfort food! Parsnip seed must be fresh, otherwise they can be reluctant to germinate. I always leave a strong healthy plant to go to seed in the summer, one plant will produce enough seed for everyone in the street! That way I know I have fresh seed to sow in spring, from a variety that is adapted to where I live. This one fell over in a strong wind, and yielded a large bag full of seed!

Sweet Corn, a wonderful summer treat! This variety is called Golden Bantam - it is an heirloom corn that is open pollinated, I can save seed for next year. All of the commercial varieties available now are F1 Hybrid, meaning seed will not grow true to type and you have to buy fresh seed every year. These are next year's seed
